Product review

Make your current garage opener smart without removing or replacing it. The meross Smart Garage Door Opener Remote (MSG100) is a retrofit controller that ties into your existing system. The kit ships with the Wi‑Fi controller unit, a high‑sensitivity wired magnetic door sensor (two parts: a magnet and a reed switch), connection cable(s), adhesive and mounting hardware, and a USB power cable with an AC power adapter. If your opener needs a special accessory to interface, meross can provide an adapter free of charge after you request it.

Hardware and compatibility: the controller is designed to interface with wired terminals on most openers and can also act through an intermediate remote where required. It supports compatibility with roughly 200 brands and over 1,600 models; it works with openers using Security+ 1.0 and Security+ 2.0 protocols (not Security+ 3.0). The newer model (MSG150) is built to natively support Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Craftsman openers without an extra adapter and exposes additional opener features.

Connectivity and control: the device connects to 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi only and is powered from AC. Once on the network you control the door from the meross mobile app or by voice using Alexa, Google Assistant or SmartThings. The app enables remote open/close, status checks, and scheduling with no monthly subscription required.

Alerts and automation: the wired door sensor provides more accurate open/closed status than many wireless sensors. Notification options include instant open/close updates, overtime alerts if the door remains open too long, and overnight reminders to close. You can also configure automatic closing after a set interval or set daily close schedules.

Installation notes: installation is intended to be simple — mount the sensor pair on the door and frame, route the sensor cable to the controller, connect the controller to the opener’s terminals or to a compatible remote, and plug in the unit. Make sure Wi‑Fi signal strength at the garage is adequate. If you run into problems, meross support is available to help and to supply any required adapter.

Pros

  • Adds smart control without replacing existing opener
  • Includes wired sensor for accurate door state
  • Works with many brands; adapters supplied if needed

Cons

  • Only 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi supported
  • Some app status mismatches reported
  • Certain openers need an extra adapter

VerdictA compact, affordable way to give an existing garage opener remote control and voice control. Installation is straightforward for anyone moderately handy, and the included wired door sensor improves state reporting. Compatibility covers many manufacturers and models, though some openers require a free adapter. Occasional app/sensor status mismatches and reliance on 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi are the main drawb

    Still reliable after three years

I installed a Meross HK100 around three years ago and moved it with me. The unit still operates well and setup takes about half an hour. Integration with Alexa, Google and Apple works and the mobile app is well designed. Lately the app sometimes shows the wrong door state even though the door moves correctly; I suspect the sensor status reporting. I’ve adjusted timing as instructed but the display glitch persists. Out of warranty now, but I’ll contact support.

    Solid unit and responsive support

I’ve reinstalled this opener across several moves and it has worked every time. Mount the magnetic sensor pair so the reed and magnet align when the door is closed. The Meross connects directly to the opener’s terminals. My Chamberlain required a special accessory, and meross sent the programmable remote accessory for free; it paired easily and included the battery. Customer service handled the accessory request quickly.

    Dependable and straightforward

A reliable way to convert a conventional opener to a smart one. App setup is simple but the device can 'time out' occasionally; I linked it to Alexa and use voice control most of the time.

Good product but installation has caveats

The magnetic sensor requires secure mounting to avoid shifting, so I drilled small pilot holes and used sheet‑metal screws. Routing and securing the sensor wire neatly takes patience. Wi‑Fi and router settings affected reliability and Alexa integration — changing some router options improved stability. If you can tweak network settings, it works well.

    A fiddly gadget at times

It can be temperamental: the app sometimes freezes showing the wrong door state and reopening the app is needed. Once it even signed me out and I didn’t have the password handy, so I had to open the door manually. Notifications about a stuck open door have appeared after I watched the door close and drove away. Not frequent, but inconvenient when it happens.

    Should have done this earlier

Worried about my wife checking the garage after leaving, I wanted a subscription‑free smart solution. I bought three units for our doors. They’re smaller than I expected and arrived well packed. Each box contained the opener module, sensor, cable and minimal mounting accessories. If you’re handy, installation is straightforward: plug in the unit (USB power cable and adapter included), pair it in the app, and mount the sensor and controller.

Turned my garage into a smart one

This compact MSG100 gave me remote control of my Genie opener. My first package missed small parts, but support sent a complete replacement. Setup was straightforward — a helpful video made placement and wiring clear. The kit includes a short test wire to check compatibility by bridging contacts on your opener before full install.

Functional but app status can be flaky

When the door is operated by the regular wall switch or remote, the meross app occasionally loses sync and shows the opposite state. The remote control still opens and closes the door, but the app reports errors until you operate the door via the meross device to resync. Alexa works but sometimes needs the voice command repeated when the app is out of sync. Annoying, but not deal‑breaking.

Works with many openers via a clever workaround

My LiftMaster only officially supports a single smart controller that charges for cloud voice links, so I tried meross. It can be wired to an existing remote to emulate button presses, which makes it compatible with many systems. If you don’t have a spare remote, there are other wiring options. The workaround allowed me to use voice assistants without the manufacturer’s subscription.
