Product review
This product is pure sodium bicarbonate formulated for pool use and is supplied as a 25-pound package. It is intended to raise total alkalinity and stabilize pH in swimming pool water, improving the effectiveness of disinfectants and reducing pH swings that can cause staining or surface damage.
Dosage guidance: approximately 11 ounces of this material will increase total alkalinity by about 10 ppm in 5,000 gallons of water. The manufacturer recommends maintaining total alkalinity in a healthy range for your pool finish: fiberglass pools typically 70–100 ppm; marcite, painted, tile, or exposed aggregate finishes 80–120 ppm; vinyl pools 120–140 ppm. If your measured alkalinity falls below the target, add the product directly to the pool while the circulation pump is operating, following the included dosing chart.
It dissolves quickly and disperses when introduced near a return jet or while water is circulating. Regular testing with a reliable alkalinity test kit is advised to confirm adjustments. Proper alkalinity helps prevent scale buildup, metal corrosion and etching of plaster or other pool surfaces, and contributes to more stable pH control.
Pros
- Quickly dissolves and disperses
- Stabilizes pH and supports sanitizer performance
- Helps protect pool surfaces and equipment
Cons
- Requires accurate testing to avoid overcorrection
- Adds alkalinity only – separate pH adjustments may be needed
- Requires handling and storage in a dry place
VerdictA straightforward 25 lb sodium bicarbonate product that reliably increases total alkalinity and reduces pH fluctuations. It dissolves rapidly, supports sanitizer performance, and helps prevent scale, metal corrosion, and surface etching when used to reach the recommended alkalinity ranges. Simple to dose while the circulation pump is running and compatible with common testing methods—good for rout
