Brand RDR Seeds

Product review

Variety and use: Roma VF is a determinate, open-pollinated paste tomato that produces meaty, red plum fruits with relatively few seeds. This type is traditionally chosen for sauce, paste, salsa, canning, roasting and fresh cooking where thick flesh is preferred.

Disease profile: The VF designation indicates breeding for resistance to Verticillium wilt and Fusarium wilt race 1. Resistance reduces risk but does not guarantee immunity; good garden hygiene, crop rotation and airflow remain important.

Seed-starting details: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep indoors about 5–6 weeks before your expected transplant date. Maintain a seed-starting medium temperature around 75–85°F, keep the mix evenly moist (not waterlogged), and provide strong overhead light and airflow for sturdy seedlings.

Transplanting and spacing: Harden off young plants gradually and only set them outside once frost risk is past and the soil has warmed. Grow in full sun, spacing plants roughly 24–48 inches apart depending on vigor. Water at soil level and avoid wetting foliage to reduce disease pressure; support fruit-laden stems with cages or stakes.

What’s included: One waterproof packet from RDR Seeds containing 300+ USA-packed, non-GMO heirloom Roma VF tomato seeds. Planting instructions are printed with the seeds. This purchase contains seeds only; live plants or harvested fruit are not included.

Pros

  • Abundant seed count (300+)
  • Open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom
  • Bred for Verticillium and Fusarium race 1 resistance

Cons

  • Resistance is not full immunity to disease
  • Determinate habit limits continuous harvest
  • Requires warm starts and frost-free transplanting

VerdictThese Roma VF seeds deliver a compact, determinate paste tomato suited to preserving and cooking. The packet holds 300+ USA-packed, non-GMO heirloom seeds and includes planting guidance. Roma VF offers bred resistance to Verticillium and Fusarium (race 1), but gardeners should still use crop rotation and basic cultural care. Start indoors 5–6 weeks before moving out after frost, keep seedlings war

Reviews

  1. KJ 5/5

    Fast-sprouting bok choy

The Bok Choy seeds sprouted reliably and grew quickly without taking much space. I’ve had success both indoors and out. Highly recommended for small spaces.

  2. Tee Jane 5/5

    Fast carrot germination — pleased

Carrot seeds I ordered germinated quickly, perfect for my fall planting. The packet had a large number of seeds and they performed well. I’ll purchase again and report back after full growth.

  3. theJones 5/5

    Seeds germinated despite heat stress

We had extreme heat and drought, and only some of my seeds were planted recently. Several sprouted fine but a few bolted when temps topped 85°F. That was on me for rushing. Overall the seeds are viable and I’m looking forward to harvesting.

  4. kluj 5/5

Great germination; sensitive to outdoor heat

Germination was excellent and the flavor is good. These plants don’t tolerate high heat outdoors here in Southern Ohio, so I switched to growing under a simple ~4000K LED indoors and had much better results.

    Reliable for small Aerogarden setups

I’ve been using RDR’s small tomato and lettuce seeds in my Aerogarden for years. The Tiny Tim/Dwarf types fit well under the lights and produce healthy, tasty plants. Tomatoes can be started indoors and later moved to containers, though they do take up a fair bit of space. My lettuce sometimes bolts if neglected, so I keep the unit in a cooler spot to prolong growth.

    Slow start, then strong sprouting

They took a little longer to pop, but once they did I had a high germination rate. Solid seeds.

  7. #AskMissPatience 1/5

Dropped rating due to pest problems

I went from a five-star impression to disappointed after pest damage; this generic round zucchini listing didn’t hold up in my garden. I’m now looking for specific named varieties with better resistance, such as Eight Ball (dark green, disease-tolerant), Cue Ball (pale green with speckles), One Ball (yellow-fruited, compact), and Lucky 8 (early maturing).

  8. Beverly A. Bambury 5/5

    Sprouts healthy and vigorous

I planted some recently and the seedlings are putting out true leaves and looking robust. I’ll thin them as they grow but everything appears healthy. I’d buy from this supplier again.

  9. Sonia 5/5

    Excellent for hydroponic basil

These basil seeds performed wonderfully in my hydroponic setup; the plants came in lush and healthy. Very pleased with the turnout.
