Product review
This kit arrives as a complete belay/rappel set: the ATC-XP belay/rappel device plus a large RockLock locking carabiner, ready to clip and use.
The ATC-XP is hot-forged from aluminum and redesigned to offer two friction modes. A high-friction configuration increases stopping power — advertised to provide up to three times the holding force — which helps with controlled lowers and steep or multi-pitch transitions.
Paired with the RockLock, an HMS-style locking carabiner, the combo delivers smooth rope flow and secure handling. The carabiner features an ergonomic shape and a keylock-style nose to reduce snagging when clipping or unclipping.
Construction is aimed at frequent use: the ATC-XP’s robust aluminum body stands up to repeated rope abrasion, and the RockLock’s solid frame is suited to gym sessions, cragging, or alpine approaches.
Functionally, the set works with a broad range of single ropes for top-rope, single-pitch and multi-pitch climbing, as well as straightforward rappels and partner belays. It’s a practical, climb-ready system for most general applications.
Pros
- Two friction modes for added control
- Includes large HMS-style locking carabiner
- Durable hot-forged aluminum construction
Cons
- Not an assisted-braking device replacement
- May be heavier than minimal single-piece options
- Some users may prefer buying carabiner separately
VerdictA dependable belay/rappel package for climbers upgrading or assembling a kit. The hot-forged aluminum ATC-XP gives extra bite with a selectable high-friction setting for steeper terrain, while the RockLock locker provides smooth rope movement and secure clipping. It’s versatile across rope diameters and durable enough for gym, crag, and alpine use, though climbers who prefer assisted-braking devic

Excellent for rappelling
Used mainly for rappels and it performed very well. Internal teeth add useful bite while lowering. The included carabiner is large and convenient; recommended as a combo.

Trusted brand and quick replacement
Haven’t climbed with it yet but it feels sturdy. The first carabiner had a nose flaw; the company handled a warranty swap quickly and sent a screwgate replacement I prefer. I’d buy the ATC-XP and a screwgate separately if you want that configuration.

Pretty and dependable
Love the blue finish and textured feel. Plenty of friction on the rope so I can relax when belaying. The carabiner is high quality and easy to use.

Minor fall, device untouched so far
Took a small fall on an easy wall before really using it. Looks great and hasn’t had proper use yet since I’m still on auto-belay walls.
