Product review

Package contents: the IC-A16 transceiver, BP-280 Li‑ion rechargeable battery, AC adapter BC-23SA, charging base BC-213 and removable antenna FA-B02AR.

The transceiver is housed in a durable polymer case sized for one-handed operation; its compact footprint makes it easy to carry in a flight bag or on a belt. Controls are tactile and designed for quick access to transmit, volume and channel selection during taxi, run-up and flight.

Power is provided by the BP-280 Li‑ion pack, which charges in the supplied BC-213 charger using the BC-23SA AC adapter. The FA-B02AR antenna screws on for full VHF performance and can be removed or stowed when not needed.

Typical use cases include student pilot training, ground handling, flightline communications and portable monitoring of tower and ground frequencies. The simple feature set keeps operation straightforward: talk/scan/monitor functions are immediately accessible, while more advanced memory and scan programming are possible via menus and external resources.

    Solid communications for ground work

I work on the ramp and use it to talk with ground and to scan traffic. Transmission is very clear and I pick up traffic from miles away. Noise suppression keeps reception usable around noisy equipment. The manual is basic and I relied on online videos for advanced features. Battery easily gets through an eight-hour shift.

    Dependable Icom performance

Arrived new and sealed. I get good reception well beyond the local airport and it’s useful for emergency comms or casual listening. Highly recommend for pilots and listeners.
