Product review
The dBooster is an inline gain device supplied as a compact unit packaged with a protective pouch and a quick-start leaflet. It is designed to be placed between a passive microphone and a microphone preamplifier or interface. Connect the mic to the dBooster’s input XLR, and run the output XLR to your preamp — it is intended for straightforward, in‑line use on stage or in the studio.
Internally the dBooster uses a true Class‑A input stage to deliver its amplification with minimal added distortion and low noise. The enclosure is machined metal for durability, and the connectors are finished to ensure reliable contact. The physical footprint is compact — small enough to sit in a mic bag or clip into a mic stand pouch — making it easy to keep on hand while tracking or performing live.
The circuit emphasizes protection from RF and other unwanted interference, helping to keep the signal clean even in challenging environments. It provides a generous amount of headroom so that both ribbon and dynamic microphones can be driven harder into modern preamps without flooding or squashing transients. The unit is tuned to deliver the same level of boost consistently across different microphone and preamp combinations, letting you predict gain staging without constant recalculation.
Pros
- Transparent Class‑A gain
- Strong RF protection
- Consistent, generous headroom
Cons
- Adds another inline component to the signal chain
- May not eliminate noise from noisy preamps
- Relatively small form factor can be easy to misplace
VerdictThe Royer dBooster brings transparent, high-headroom gain to passive microphones without coloring the source. Its Class‑A input topology and strong RF shielding yield clean amplification for dynamics and ribbons, and it produces a predictable amount of boost regardless of the preamp used. For users needing extra level before a quieter preamp or interface, it’s an effective and reliable inline solu

Gives my M‑160 the extra clean headroom it needs
I use the dBooster’s 20 dB of clean gain with my Beyer M‑160 ribbon into a Great River MP‑2NV. It pushes more usable level into my Apollo interface so I can keep the Great River’s gain lower and reduce its higher‑gain noise. The preamp still shows its inherent hiss at very high gains, even with the booster, so it’s a trade‑off — but the dBooster doesn’t change the microphone’s character. A specialist ribbon preamp might yield an even quieter chain, but given how happy I am with my Great River, the dBooster is a very practical compromise. I haven’t compared it to simpler boosters on the market, so I can’t comment on those alternatives.

Extremely clean amplification
Provides very clear, unobtrusive gain — the cleanest boost I’ve used.
