Product review

This battery-operated Nest Protect (model S3000BWES) is a combined smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in a white, low-profile housing. It arrives with the unit, a mounting plate for ceiling or wall installation, and is packaged with a Google Seal intended for online marketplace listings.

The casing is a durable white plastic designed to blend with ceilings and walls. The sensor array uses a Split Spectrum Sensor to detect both fast-flaming and slow, smoldering fires and reports the approximate location of the hazard. A separate CO sensor continuously monitors for carbon monoxide and announces its position if an issue is detected.

Nest Protect talks with a clear human voice to give location-specific warnings and can send push notifications to your phone so you’re alerted even when away from home. The App Silence feature lets you silence the alarm from the Nest app when the event is minor, while the unit performs nightly self-tests and provides a “Nightly Promise” status when the lights are turned off so you know systems are functioning.

Pathlight remains off until motion is detected beneath the unit, when it softly illuminates a hallway or room. The device is designed for quick mounting to the included plate and uses replaceable AA batteries (users should follow manufacturer recommendations for battery type). Typical diameter is similar to other residential alarms, and it mounts flush to ceilings or high on walls for standard coverage.

Pros

  • Voice alerts that state location of danger
  • App notifications and remote silence feature
  • Automatic nightly self-tests and motion-activated Pathlight

Cons

  • Requires specific high-voltage AA batteries for reliable operation
  • Units bought online may be older based on manufacture date
  • Network or language setup can occasionally need support

VerdictA feature-rich, battery-operated smoke and carbon monoxide alarm that speaks location-aware warnings, links to your phone for remote alerts, and performs automatic self-checks each night. Strong on detection and convenience, but pay attention to battery type and manufacture date when buying.

Reviews

  1. Larry B 5/5

No low-battery warnings after years of use

After roughly 2.5 years I haven’t seen a low-battery alert. It uses a higher-end AA and I plan to replace with the same type when needed.

  2. Jamie H 5/5

Comforting to have around the house

I appreciate the self-checks, battery notifications, and the nightlight for late-night trips. I added a second unit in the basement and linked them so both sound if there’s an alarm.

  3. Cindy C 5/5

    Strong recommendation for remote alerts

Works reliably and the app sends alerts if smoke or fire is detected. Great peace of mind when I'm not home.

  4. Mel H. 4/5

Delivery was slow but the device performed well

My order experienced cancellations and delays, but the alarm itself is well-built and sensitive — it alerted before my older alarm did while cooking. The nightlight is a nice extra.

  5. yoshi 1/5

    Battery compatibility seems flawed

The unit appears to demand higher-voltage AA batteries. Regular AAs that start below a certain voltage register as dead even if they have normal charge, so use the recommended battery type for proper operation.

  6. Aeacus 5/5

Effective detection but check manufacture date

The Protects give early warnings and reduce false alarms compared with my old unit, and the app integration is handy when I travel. One caution: units bought online can be several years old, so check the production date before purchasing.

  7. Goody 4/5

Advanced features but watch the expiration

This is a capable alarm, but mine was older than I wanted. The unit stops functioning ten years from its manufacture date, so buying nearby stock or checking the date code avoids losing useful life.

  8. Brandie G. 5/5

Gave me reassurance after a close call

After a toaster-oven fire where my old alarm failed, I chose Nest Protect for its phone alerts and automatic self-tests. The idea that it notifies me remotely and checks itself regularly sold me on it.

  9. Red Hen 5/5

Excellent for an outbuilding or detached space

I installed one in a detached kitchen; setup was easy and it gives major peace of mind while I’m away from that building.

  10. Herriman Family 5/5

Linked alarms and nightlight let me sleep easier

I replaced cheap detectors with seven Protect units so alarms communicate across the house. I appreciate the Pathlight and the reliable test feature — they’ve triggered appropriately during a couple of cooking mishaps.

  11. Stevie 5/5

Smooth setup and very helpful support

Setup was straightforward, though I hit a language selection snag. Tech support was responsive, walked me through a reset, and even offered help setting up a second unit while I was on the line.

  12. R. B. 5/5

Modern look and quick setup if you follow instructions

The design is sleek and the hallway Pathlight is handy. Connecting took about five to eight minutes, and the mounting plate allows easy leveling. Tip: register it in the app before final mounting.

  13. J. Robertson 5/5

Simple install and an impressive interface

I had an older Nest that I avoided installing because some functions were disabled. When a conventional detector in my house started making two different beeps, I finally reached out to support. The rep was helpful and friendly, and the Nest Protect's setup and on-device interface are terrific.
