Product review
What you receive: one large Gorilla Chew wood piece intended as a standalone chew.
Material and size: crafted from compacted natural hardwood, this large chew measures roughly 6 inches wide by 5 inches long. The solid, log-like shape gives a heavy, robust feel suitable for steady gnawing.
How it’s used: present as an alternative to sticks, baseboards, or plastic toys to satisfy chewing instincts. The firm wood surface helps scrape and rub teeth and gums during chewing sessions, contributing to oral care. It’s safe for breeds and ages when used with supervision.
Maintenance and behavior: the chew is designed not to soak up odors or stain carpets while in use. Over time the surface will abrade into small flakes or powder rather than sharp shards; however, larger cracks can appear in some units, so routine checks and supervised use are recommended.
Pros
- Durable, long-lasting hardwood construction
- Supports dental and gum wear without becoming odorous
- Large, hefty shape satisfies heavy chewers
Cons
- Can shed small flakes during use
- Large and heavy for some smaller dogs
- Occasional cracks or larger splinters reported
VerdictThis large Gorilla Chew is a simple, long-lasting hardwood chew that many heavy chewers prefer over household wood or soft toys. It helps reduce destructive chewing, aids gums and teeth by offering a firm surface to work on, and doesn’t develop strong odors or stain floors. Expect gradual surface wear and occasional small flakes—most owners find that manageable—but inspect for larger cracks or sha

Too large and a bit cracked
The piece I received had a few cracks and was much larger than the listing suggested.

Huge, safe alternative to sticks
Recommended by my breeder when my pup was a chewing machine. The large size is comical to watch as she drags it around. Expect some soft flakes that make a mess to vacuum, but I have no safety concerns compared to random sticks that can splinter sharply. I’ve repurchased several times; during peak chewing phases one chew lasted around three months.

Works for a very heavy chewer
Bought for my 120 lb power chewer. He seeks it out each evening and works on it for 10–15 minutes. It wears down into small, easy‑to‑collect bits and he ignores his older bones while using this. No worrying cracking sounds from his teeth like with other chews.

Perfect for my mulch-muncher
My 16‑month, 70 lb Giant Schnauzer used to eat mulch and sticks; she won't touch bones or plastic chews but immediately took to this wood chew. It’s changed our routine because we can leave it out for her to reach instead of her hunting yard debris. After a week it's worn as expected — a larger splinter did come off once, but otherwise it flakes away cleanly. We always watch her when she chews. If it doesn’t produce dangerous splinters over time, we’ll buy again.

Does the job for my Rottie
My one‑year Rottweiler loved chewing wood and had ruined baseboards. These large pieces are hefty — I sometimes wonder if the medium would fit better — but they’ve stopped the destructive chewing. Chunks come off in small pieces that he sometimes swallows, but they pass without issue. They can be messy, but I’d rather vacuum than repair walls. After weeks he’s barely dented them.

I’ll buy replacements when worn out
At first I balked at paying for a chunk of wood, but these are excellent. The wood tends to powder or dissolve rather than splinter into sharp shards. My dog works through one over about 6–8 months; I’ve bought two so far and will get another when this one is gone.

Ended up lasting over ten months
I initially thought the wood made my new dog cough, so I avoided it, but that turned out to be kennel cough. The chew is now her favorite and she’s had it for about 10 months with only small pieces left. It did shrink with use, and I watch her when she eats the bits, but it’s held up far longer than I expected. I’ll reorder.

Two‑pack quality wasn’t consistent
I loved the single piece I bought earlier, so I tried a two‑pack and was let down. Both pieces arrived cracked lengthwise so I returned them for an exchange, but replacements also had fractures. One dog broke off a sharp fragment within minutes, which I removed for safety. My single earlier lasted months with no cracking, so this batch felt like a quality drop.

Just a big chunk of wood
It’s safe wood for chewing but essentially just a large log. I split mine to make it easier for my puppy, but then she tears bits off and it can splinter. A smaller stick‑style option would be more user friendly and less messy.

Our Aussie still enjoys it
I ordered the wrong size by mistake, but our Australian Shepherd still has to work at it and enjoys the challenge of chewing it down.

Great for a very large dog
My adult Great Dane loves this. It does shed some material onto the floor, but that’s easy to clean up. It’s lasted a long time with daily use and continues to hold up well.

Big, heavy and my dog enjoys it
I got the large for my 62 lb German Shepherd/Boxer mix who destroys many 'aggressive chewer' toys. The piece is very large and weighs a lot, but she moves it around the house and chews contentedly. I was surprised to find a handful of wood chips on the floor after a short time — they weren’t tiny but not dangerously large either. She likes it and it keeps her busy.
