Product review

What you get: the 8-inch Genesis forged chef's knife and the manufacturer’s one-year warranty.

Construction and materials: The blade is precision-forged from high-carbon, no-stain German cutlery steel and finished with a taper grind to enhance slicing efficiency and edge life. The knife is a single-piece forged design with a substantial bolster to improve balance and hand placement. Edge surfaces are polished by hand to refine the bevel.

Handle and fit: The handle is made from black nonslip Santoprene, shaped for ergonomic comfort and a secure hold even when wet. The full-tang construction contributes to the knife's solid feel and durability.

Size and uses: Featuring an 8-inch blade, this chef's knife is suited to heavy-duty slicing, chopping, dicing, mincing, and portioning tasks — from large cuts of meat to root vegetables and piles of herbs.

Origin and care: The knife is manufactured in Taiwan using European components and technology. To preserve the blade and handle, wash by hand with warm water and mild soap, rinse and dry immediately; avoid dishwashers and prolonged soaking. Regular honing and occasional sharpening on a whetstone will maintain peak performance.

  1. Tony Bentivegna 5/5

My top low-cost chef's knife pick

When my son needed a replacement, I handed him this one. The balance and handle are just right, and it came sharp out of the box. It sharpens easily and takes a fine edge. I’ve owned pairing knives by the same maker for years with excellent results.

  2. Alvin English 5/5

    Reliable German-style workhorse

This knife has enough heft to push through dense squash confidently without slipping, and the handle texture gives a secure grip. For heavy, dense produce it’s my go-to; I prefer lighter knives for delicate work but appreciate this one for tough jobs.

  3. Jackie Negron 5/5

Heavy use in a professional setting

I use these knives every day at work and they hold an edge so well coworkers borrow them often. For an economical chef's knife they slice cleanly and have lasted me for years. I’ve rotated through several from the line and they all perform consistently.

  4. Nancy J 5/5

    Great hand feel and sharpness

Very nice knife — excellent hand feel and a keen edge right away.

  5. Cezary 5/5

Ten years later and still my go-to

I realized I bought this about a decade ago and it remains my favorite. It’s well balanced with a pleasing weight, easy to sharpen and holds an edge reliably. After a quick hone it sliced effortlessly today. A long-lasting piece that I hope hasn’t changed since my original purchase.

  6. Tim J. Zebulske 5/5

Sturdy, sharp and easy to care for

Exactly what is advertised: balanced, sharp, and holds an edge. It handles everything from vegetables to raw meat and even frozen items. I found it large for some tasks so I added the 6-inch model for smaller work; having both sizes has been handy.

  7. Eric 5/5

Solid value — own several of them

For the money these knives are hard to beat. Handles are comfortable, blades arrive very sharp, and they retain their edge well. I have multiple shapes from this series and use them all; consistently good performance.

    Tip snapped.

  9. AP 5/5

    Performs as described

The knife works well and the ergonomics are thoughtful.

  10. goldman 5/5

    Comfortable weight and reliable edge

Feels good to hold and chop with. Has the right heft to drive through herbs as well as firmer veggies and meat. I use it daily and it remains my primary knife; regular whetstone maintenance keeps it slicing cleanly.

  11. Mario 5/5

    Good quality for home cooks

A balanced, sharp knife that arrived ready to use. It’s an excellent value for home cooks who don’t need premium pro-level steel, and it outperformed a Henckels blade I had from a set.

Impressively balanced and sharp for the price

This Genesis 8-inch feels very similar in profile to higher-cost German chef knives. Forged from high-carbon German steel and made in Taiwan, it arrived razor-sharp and is well balanced. It likely uses a standard Western bevel and holds its edge nicely for home use; stropping or sharpening brings it right back. I particularly appreciate the overall feel and balance.

  13. Eyeconic 4/5

    Good value that required adjustment

This replaced a longtime favorite and felt different at first. It’s well made from quality steel and arrived very sharp. The spine is thinner than some forged knives, which is noticeable with certain grip styles, but for straight chopping it works fine. Overall a solid value, though it takes a little getting used to.
